Our Long Term Volunteer Program is aimed at volunteers wishing to stay for a minimum of three months up to two years. Long Term Volunteers will be recruited to carry out specific roles within RIDE, either as advertised under our Current Vacancies, or through prior proposal and agreement with RIDE Director S.Jeyaraj.
RIDE’s overall goal is to work towards being a self sustaining NGO. While recent cuts in funding have affected us, they have also encouraged us to re-assess our short and long term strategy and find new ways of working such as:
- Generating sustainable income to support our ongoing projects
- Creating self sustaining projects
- Implementing new projects in a cost effective way without the need for high levels of outside funding
- Find new ways of fundraising to support projects which cannot self sustain
We see the role of long term volunteers as being an integral part of the RIDE strategy going forward to take on many responsibilities in key areas such as fundraising, eco-tourism, marketing and teaching English, among others.
Your schedule will begin with an induction into RIDE which will include visiting our various programs and getting an overview of RIDE’s initiatives including bridge schools, Self Help Groups, RIDE English Medium Schools, training programs and child labour eradication programs. It will also include cultural tours giving you the opportunity to spend time in some of the villages to get a taste of rural life in South India, visit local weavers.
As well as the basic induction program above you will be offered unique learning experiences organised by RIDE to enhance your understanding and assist you in your volunteer placement.
RIDE will act as facilitator, mentor, orientation and support but stresses that volunteers must take an active role in planning their involvement in the organisation. The RIDE programs are wide ranging and different people will adapt at different levels, therefore, only you will know how far you wish to be immersed and at what level you want to participate in activities.
The working day is usually 10am – 1pm and 3pm – 6pm, however this is flexible depending on role and external factors (e.g. power cuts). Sometimes meetings will be held in the evening or schedules may require an earlier start.
Long term volunteers will be requested to sign a contract which will outline your commitment to RIDE in terms of length of stay and role.
You will be required to prepare a project schedule within the first few weeks and carry out regular update meetings with the Director, who will also act as your support and mentor throughout your stay. Other staff will also be at hand to assist you and share knowledge. There will be regular opportunities for discussion and debate around many topics, and RIDE will gladly support you in any particular area of interest or research you wish to carry out during your time.
On completion of your volunteer program you will be provided with a letter of recognition for service to RIDE.
All our volunteer programs are unpaid. For the Working Volunteer program we request that participants pay the following fees. This goes towards your accommodation and three meals per day: The revised rate effect from 1st June 2017
We are happy to accept applications throughout the year for those wishing to submit proposals for work and urge people from all backgrounds to apply. You can visit our Volunteer page to get an idea of the areas in which you could volunteer; this is not a definitive list and you are welcome to propose your own ideas provided that they fit with RIDE’s overall goals. You can also visit our Current Vacancies page for a list of the opportunities which we are looking to fill.
If you are interested in volunteering with RIDE, please download our Volunteer Information document which gives you further detail on what to expect from a volunteer placement with RIDE.
We look forward to hearing from you!
