Volunteer

We regularly receive individuals, groups and members of international organisations to participate in our programs. These are unpaid positions and volunteers receive certificates of experience at the end of their term. AREAS FOR VOLUNTEERING

Women’s Empowerment

You will be working to develop our women’s craft program which is currently in its infancy. You will create and design new products, identify new opportunities, share skills or improve the workflow and the organisation of the different processes.Design and product development skills, experience of markets local or international or management skills would all be an advantage in this field. Good spoken and written English essential and a willingness to learn the local language would be an advantage.

Waste Management

RIDE has implemented a management program in a handful of villages in the district. Right now it is still in the early stages and we would love volunteers who could help us improve our current system and/or start a new method of waste management, as well as roll out into neighbouring villages.Knowledge of waste management systems and project management skills a must in this field. Fluent in English or Tamil essential and a willingness to learn the local language would be a huge advantage.

 Eco-Tourism

Kanchipuram, known both as Temple City and Silk City, has a lot to offer tourists, responding to these needs RIDE has developed our Eco-tourism program, offering various programs and cultural activities to our guests. You will support our staff with the booking processes and take part in the coordinating and delivering of our cultural experiences such as temple, silk weaving and village tours and our child labour program. As well as play a part in developing new tours. You will be a key contact point for visitors to RIDE, therefore English language is essential. You must also have good people skills, management skills and an interest in learning about the local culture and customs. A willingness to learn the local language would also be an advantage.

Office Management

You will help run the office therefore your role will be varied from day to day. It will involve answering the telephone and email queries and taking bookings for accommodation, Eco-tourism and volunteer programs. It will also involve maintaining the RIDE website, social media and news pages. It could also involve writing funding proposals and letters to support the directors, looking after the RIDE library, assisting with visitors, you name it really! Computer skills, especially Microsoft Word, Excel and internet are essential. Good level of English language both spoken and written, organisation and people skills also required. Would suit someone able to work under their own initiative.

Children’s Education

Help us run our various children’s programs.We run three programs in May ready for the new school year which starts in June, we also run various programs throughout the year. You could be involved in these programs which bring together released labour children to provide them with additional support and attention outside of school. You could assist with the planning and organising then participating in activities such as dance, songs, role play or anything else that captivates them and broadens their minds. Outside these programs you would be free to assist in one of our schools supporting the teachers deliver their syllabus. Both spoken and written English is essential and prior teaching experience would be an advantage, as would a willingness to learn the local language.

Village Development

There are many ways that rural Kanchipuram and the people within it can be supported at a grass routes level. You could begin by carrying out your own study; traveling to villages and documenting issues, or you could discuss with RIDE and commence immediately on a development project which we have in mind. You will identify village development and infrastructure work within the village as well as help execute plans for village development. Training in rural planning and project management a huge advantage but not essential, but will ultimately determine at what capacity you can get involved. Must be fluent in English and have a willingness to learn the local language. Would suit someone able to work under their own initiative and confident in immersing themselves in the local culture.

Marketing and Promotion

You will be responsible for promoting RIDE through various channels and researching companies to contact via email, letter and social media channels. This could include contacting colleges, universities, volunteer agencies, travel guides etc to raise awareness of RIDE and our programs. You will be responsible for preparing and distributing the monthly newsletter via email and keeping the news page up to date on the website. Therefore you will be required to stay up to date on current events at RIDE and be present where necessary to take photos and document events. You will also be involved in maintaining the RIDE website and other ad hoc marketing campaigns. English language and computer skills are essential for this role, especially Microsoft Word, Excel and internet. Previous marketing experience would be an advantage.

Road Safety

Road safety is a big issue in India, with ever more vehicles on the road and lack of infrastructure to cater for vehicles and pedestrians, forcing them to share the road. Therefore road safety is an important element of RIDE’s work. This role could involve supporting development of infrastructure in the villages, or may just as likely involve carrying out educational programs for children and adults on road safety through workshops, campaigns or school programs. English language is essential for this program A willingness to learn the local language would be a huge advantage.

Health and Hygiene

You will work to improve the health of the rural communities and may wish to focus on one specific target group, be it children, women, elderly etc. This could be achieved in various ways based on your personal ambitions and experience, but could involve running healthcare drop-in clinics, health and hygiene education for adults or children, running or taking part in AIDS, TB or malaria awareness campaigns. Most roles within this field would suit qualified healthcare professionals, however, there is also scope to teach basic hygiene, such as hand washing clean water etc. A willingness to learn the local language a huge advantage in this field. Good people skills, patience and understanding are essential.

Funding and Proposal Writing

You will support us in seeking out new funding for future projects. This will include researching into potential private investors, government and non government organisations, and following the correct application process for each application, as well as preparing proposals to send to potential donors. The role would suit someone with experience in writing funding proposals, any prior knowledge of winning funding bids would be a huge advantage.

Other Skills

We recognise that you may not fit into one of our volunteer categories but instead have your own skills or ideas which you would like to share with RIDE. This could include skills which you feel you could teach our people, adults or children, or experience you have gained through carrying out similar work elsewhere. Whatever your skills or ambitions for your volunteer role we would love to hear from you and discuss how we can work together to create a mutually beneficial program.

Marketing & Promotion Assistant (Long Term Volunteer)

We are currently looking to recruit a Marketing and Promotion Assistant as part of our Long Term Volunteer Program, based in our RIDE office in Little Kanchipuram.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the promotion of RIDE through various channels in order to raise awareness of our current programs and grow our network of supporters both on and offline.

The candidate will ideally be able to commit to a minimum of 3 months. We are looking for someone to start in the next couple of months however are also happy to receive applications for future start dates.

Eco Tourism Assistant/Guide (Young Indian Internship Scheme)

We are currently looking to recruit an Eco Tourism Assistant/Guide as part of our Young Indian Internship Scheme. The successful applicant will assist RIDE in delivering our Eco-tourism programs and in communicating with visitors from around the world.

We are looking for someone who can speak both Tamil and English and ideally is able to commit to at least 3 days per week for a minimum of 3 months. We are looking for someone to start immediately however are also happy to receive applications for later start dates.

English Teacher (Long Term Volunteer)

We are currently looking to recruit an English Teacher as part of our Long Term Volunteer Program. The successful applicant will assist RIDE by teaching both written and spoken English to our First School teachers and RIDE staff.

We are looking for someone who has a high level of spoken and written English, preferable a qualified teacher,TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) trained or with equivalent experience. The candidate will ideally be able to commit to a minimum of 3 months. We are looking for someone to start in the next couple of months however are also happy to receive applications for later start dates.
